help me to retire, and continue to live a fulfilling life.

I am going through an explorative thought process. i want to retire, not when i am 60, but as soon as possible. not stop working, but retire from big business. my question is, is there anyone who has retired “prematurely” by normal standards, that can lend some experience? was it the right choice? what did you do? how did you financially structure things? how much money do i need?
i work as an expat in asia, and am focusing on getting my finances in order. i want to “work” for 7 more years, but am starting the thought process of how to set things up after that. of course i don’t want to compromise lifestyle by making a bad choice.
i am mid 30’s.

I started working in an office when I was 16, and by 35 I was completely burned out. Luckily, I had started saving agressively when I was 21, and so I had enough savings to start thinking about not working, but it took me until 40 to actually admit that I was retiring. Some ideas:

You have to really really want it. It takes a lot of financial planning. You have to give up on buying shiny things and going to restaurants. You also need to completely reorganize your vision of yourself and how you live. I know an awful lot of people with more money than I have, and every single one of them under the age of 60 is still working. People talk a lot about early retirement, but when push comes to shove, they don’t want to reduce their expenses, they don’t want to lose the self-importance they get from having a career, and they don’t actually want the slower, more reflective rhythm of being retired.

Your first plans, based on a lifetime of daydreaming in the office, probably won’t work. Be ready to try different things before you manage to rebuild a new life that works. If you can do a sabbatical year or work as a freelancer and start experiencing what it’s like to have control over you time, I highly recommend it. I started off thinking I would work for part of the year and spend the rest of my time in a paradise I had been dreaming about since I first saw it in my early 20s. That life failed pretty miserably, for a few different reasons.

First, I discovered that it’s not really possible to do anything satisfying in work without being committed to it at the same all-consuming level as everyone else. People expect you to be constantly available and ambitious like they are, and if you’re not it’s really hard to stay in the game. I don’t believe that fantasies of semi-retirement can work well. Maybe you have the discipline to set very limited goals, work every day for a couple of hours to reach them, and then turn off the PC and the telephone, but I don’t. Everything I started failed because I wasn’t willing anymore to commit all my energy to it.

For me, admitting I wanted to retire meant being willing to let my skills rot and give up on any idea of succeeding at something recognizable. That can be scary, but also liberating. If your greatest satisfactions in life aren’t personal and invisible, you’re probably not ready to retire.

Once I gave up on the idea of continuing to have some kind of identity from my work, I lost my ability to relate to a lot of my friends, who were caught up in a rhythm of life I didn’t want anymore. It’s become fashionable over the last 10 years or so to always talk about how busy you are, and once you retire you’ll find that your conversation has no interest for people who are still living in that world. You’ll find it really hard to save money when you’re going out with people who are working hard and spending hard. You won’t get a lot of sympathy for the challenges of building a new life around not working, either.

The paradise fantasy didn’t work out too well, either. I found out that after more than about 3 months in paradise, life became so static and empty that I got bored.

After a few years of failures and false starts, I moved to an island in the Mediterranean that’s full of people who’ve opted to work less and live more. People do whatever minimal job they need to get by, no one defines themselves by their work, everyone devotes a lot of energy to figuring out how to live well without spending any money, and I fit right in. It helps a lot to have friends of different ages at different stages in their lives, too. Start building a new type of social life now, or else you’ll find yourself adrift once you retire.

If you’re in a couple, it’s essential to start working now with your partner on how you want to live. How are you going to stand being in the house together all the time? Do you agree on how to reduce your expenses? Do you both want the same rhythm of life, and the same balance between travelling and staying at home, being in the city and being in nature? My parents are both still working past age 70 because they haven’t sorted out these issues between them.

For the financial planning, you need to learn two things: how to manage a portfolio, and how to reduce your expenses. Here are some good intro books on portfolio management:

The Intelligent Asset Allocator
10 Steps to a Perfect Retirement Portfolio

FireCALC will teach you all you need to know about the financial realities of retiring. Spend some serious time playing with the advanced options and learning about what can happen if you retire on the eve of a major market crash.

The basic investing rules: Stop reading all financial news. You have no idea where the markets are going in the next couple of years, and no one else does, either. Invest for long-term returns and diversify to reduce risk. Put your money in low-cost index funds. Taxes and fund fees are your enemies. Almost all financial advisors will wind up making more money in fees from your portfolio over the long term than you do. Rebalance your asset allocation every year. Don’t touch your investments otherwise, even if the market crashes.

Since you’re outside the US, investing gets more complicated. I still haven’t figured out how to balance my portfolio between different currencies, and dealing with multiple tax jurisdictions had made things a lot more difficult. Also, fund offerings outside the US tend to be gigantic ripoffs. You’ll need to work hard to build a modern portfolio out of the investment opportunities available to you where you are.

Plan on withdrawing no more than 4% of the initial value of your retirement portfolio a year, adjusted each year for inflation. Another way of saying that: you need 25 times your annual expenses in the bank before you can retire. You’ll find that the time you spend exploring ways to spend less money and still be happy will pay off more than the time you spend trying to make a killing with your investments.

Gmail has an interesting quirk where you can add a plus sign (+) after your Gmail address, and it’ll still get to your inbox. It’s called plus-addressing, and it essentially gives you an unlimited number of e-mail addresses to play with. Here’s how it works: say your address is pinkyrocks@gmail.com, and you want to automatically label all work e-mails. Add a plus sign and a phrase to make it pinkyrocks+work@gmail.com and set up a filter to label it work (to access your filters go to Settings->Filters and create a filter for messages addressed to pinkyrocks+work@gmail.com. Then add the label work).

More real world examples:

Find out who is spamming you: Be sure to use plus-addressing for every form you fill out online and give each site a different plus address.

Example: You could use
pinkyrocks+nytimes@gmail.com for nytimes.com
pinkyrocks+freestuff@gmail.com for freestuff.com
Then you can tell which site has given your e-mail address to spammers, and automatically send them to the trash.

Automatically label your incoming mail: I’ve talked about that above.

Archive your mail: If you receive periodic updates about your bank account balance or are subscribed to a lot of mailing lists that you don’t check often, then you can send that sort of mail to the archives and bypass your Inbox.

Example: For the mailing list, you could give pinkyrocks+mailinglist1@gmail.com as your address, and assign a filter that will archive mail to that address automatically. Then you can just check in once in a while on the archive if you want to catch up.

Update (9/7): Several commentors have indicated that this is not a Gmail specific trick. kl says Fastmail has enabled this feature as well. caliban10 reports that a lot of sites reject addresses with a plus sign. You might use other services like Mailinator for disposable addresses instead. pbinder recommends using services like SpamGourmet, which redirects mail to your real address.

jabber服务器参考地址：　jabbernet.dk
jaim.at
bgmn.net
freelinq.com

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

—John 15:12

Not a single business school in the U.S. offers a course in love. And while business school curriculums do list a variety of leadership studies, the subject of love is not discussed. Yet Jesus, the greatest leader ever, advocated that we should love each other. These were not idle words–Jesus commanded it. This was his last command before ascending to heaven.

Rarely is love a topic of discussion in business circles, especially among Fortune 500 companies. Over the years, I attended many leadership seminars, and not once do I recall the subject of love on a program. Admittedly, railroad and overnight freight delivery managers are macho guys; certainly they’re not what you’d call warm and cuddly. Just the same, good leadership principles apply to all fields, whether you’re managing day-care providers or NFL football players.

The first letter of John in 1 John 4:7-12 tells us to love each other because love comes from God. Those who do not love, do not know God, whose love was revealed to us when he sent his son into this world to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. And while no one has ever seen God, if we love one another, he lives through us and his love is perfected in us. This scripture lets us know that we are put on this earth to love one another. My love for my fellow man isn’t confined to my immediate family. Knowing that God is in me, I have an unlimited supply of love. So great is this supply that I can love everywhere, including the workplace.

I don’t try to hide my love at WWT. I love our employees, our vendors, and our customers. I confess I don’t go around blurting out to people how much I love them–not that anything’s wrong with that. However, many people in today’s society aren’t ready to hear it said out loud. So instead, I declare my love for them through my actions. I am here to serve them, and they know it. Their needs come first, before mine. This explains why I made sure my employees never missed a paycheck when we had severe cash flow problems, even though I had to skip a few of my own.

I express my love by showing my people respect–for instance, by my willingness to listen to them. I demonstrate how much they mean to me by inviting them to share my vision and my dreams. I provide opportunities for advancement. I display my care for them by making sure our company stands for quality and integrity in every aspect of our business. I value the company’s reputation, understanding that each of their reputations is on the line with mine. These actions express my love for our people.

The above are intangibles, but there are also many tangible expressions of love at WWT. We have a wonderful health-care plan for our employees and their families, 90 percent of which is paid for by the company. And since we are concerned about their future after they retire, for the past six years the company has matched–dollar for dollar–the money employees put into their 401(k) plans. Likewise, our compensation plan is set up to reward their contribution to the company’s success.

We treat our people as though they are family, and we treat their families like family, too. This was our motivation to extend exceptional health-care benefits to their families. Additionally, throughout the year, we have family-oriented events including barbecues and parties. Our suites for professional baseball, football, and hockey games are always filled with our people and their family members. And we always feed them well at these events. When we treat them to a good time, we do it first-class. That’s because we think they deserve the best we can give them.

A good leader demonstrates his love for his people through his fairness in his decision making. This is illustrated in one of my favorite biblical stories, 1 Kings 3:17-27. This scripture gives an accounting of how King Solomon judiciously handled a delicate situation when two women went to him to solve a dispute. The two women lived in the same house and both had claimed giving birth to a son. One infant died at childbirth; and now each mother claimed the surviving child was hers. After King Solomon heard each woman insist that she was the rightful mother, he called to a servant to bring his sword to him. He then said, “Divide the living boy in two; then give half to one, and half to the other.” Immediately, one of the women cried out, “Please, my lord, give her the living boy, do not kill him.” The other said, “It shall be neither mine or yours; divide it.” With this demonstration, the king said, “Give the baby to the first woman. She is the mother.”

Like King Solomon, there are times when a good leader must select one individual over another to promote. In such cases, diplomacy prevents bitterness. This is akin to a parent who is in the awkward circumstance of having to favor one child over another: a mother must decide which child will receive a one-of-a-kind family heirloom; a father of two has only one extra ticket for a football game, and so on. In all such cases, a good leader, or a good parent, must act so that everyone’s dignity is preserved.

In Galatians 5:6, it is written, “The only thing that counts is faith working through love.” How true. Faith is based on love. My people know I put them first. From where I stand, their best interests come before everything else, including my own. They know I am there for them and I do everything I possibly can for their benefit. Serving them is my number-one priority. I commit myself to keep their careers intact, safe, and secure. When you do this for people, they respond by being loyal, caring employees. Who says love doesn’t belong in the workplace? I know it does. I’ve been blessed by being able to express love to my people–in many ways–and it is being returned to me in kind.

PURCHASE, NY – January 12, 2007 – Beginning in February, Pepsi-Cola will reach out to consumers in a different way than ever before. Pepsi will connect with consumers via a global brand restyle – a 360-degree marketing campaign that will be reflected all over the world on TV, radio, in print, packaging and online. The first, most visible piece of this effort will be new package graphics for Pepsi-Cola that change every few weeks to reflect themes close to the hearts of teens and young adults, such as sports, music, fashion and cars. The new graphics will be on more than eight billion Pepsi-Cola cans, bottles and cups throughout the world.

The iconic Pepsi globe logo and name lettering will remain the same – as will Pepsi’s great taste – but the background graphics will change every few weeks, marking the first time Pepsi has altered its look so frequently. In its 109-year existence, Pepsi-Cola’s look has changed just 10 times, but this year alone, it will change more than 35 times.
This steady rotation of designs reflects the fast, ever-changing interests of the elusive “millennial” generation.

Not only will the packages look different, but they’ll be different.
Pepsi bottles, cans and cups will give consumers access to exclusive online content, games, contests and sweepstakes through unique web addresses on each of the designs.

Pepsi’s global brand restyle will be highlighted in new thematic ad campaigns. The TV, print and out-of-home advertising will utilize the iconic Pepsi globe in whole new ways to represent the fun, optimistic, and youthful spirit that consumers have long associated with Pepsi. The restyle will come to life in-store with merchandising, account-specific promotions and point-of-sale materials that will showcase an array of packaging representing the wide range of design graphics.

Examples of the upcoming packaging designs and promotions:
* In the U.S., the first can, titled “Your Pepsi,” will link to a
website inviting consumers to help design a Pepsi billboard ad which will run in New York City’s Times Square in April.

* Consumers in the U.S. will also have a chance to design a
special paint scheme for NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon’s car that will race later this year.

* In many international markets, designs will link to websites
that enable consumers to create music and video that they can share with others.

* Consumers will also have access to packaging designs by some of
the biggest names in sports and music.

“On the surface, this might look like a packaging update, but it’s much more than that. We’re changing the way we interact with consumers – and now we’re doing it on their terms,” said Cie Nicholson, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Pepsi-Cola North America.
“When people pick up a Pepsi, they’ll be getting much more than a great tasting cola. They’ll be getting a passport to the things they enjoy most.”

“We’ve learned that young people embrace change and seek discovery, connectedness, personalization and multiculturalism. We believe this restyle touches on all these trends,” said Ron Coughlin, chief marketing officer, PepsiCo International. “Now our consumers will have a different experience each time they buy a Pepsi.”
